Project Eco-prise
Key Details
Project Eco-prise has two funding streams:
1. Materials Recovery
• Enterprises and organizations can receive up to $40 per tonne of material collected and/or remanufactured or composted during the previous calendar year
• Eligible materials include organics (food and yard waste), construction / demolition materials, all paper grades, tin, glass, plastic and textiles
• Materials covered under the BC Recycling Regulation are not eligible
• Materials collected from homes or businesses within the City of Terrace, District of Stewart or District of Kitimat are not eligible as alternate support programs are in place, however, your project may still be eligible for Education Credits
II. Community Education and Zero Waste Marketing
• Projects that are designed to teach others how to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost are eligible to receive up to $2,000 to cover materials and wages
• Marketing expenses for campaigns that promote the Zero Waste message or a related service are also eligible. Projects that exclusively target homes or businesses within the District of Kitimat are not eligible as alternate support programs are in place
• Eligible applicants include private companies, non-profit organizations,educational institutions and individuals
Early-bird deadline is June 15. All applications are due by October 31, 2010.
Early-bird applications will be given priority funding in the event that the funds are oversubscribed. Materials Recovery grants are retroactive – only services that diverted materials for the previous year (2009) are eligible.

• Reduction of waste and recovery of resources
• Creation and support of local jobs and new businesses
• Development of materials recovery infrastructure and community education programs that will allow us to move closer to our Zero Waste target
• Long-term cost savings for RDKS and residents
• Encourages networking and partnerships to share expertise, develop cooperative marketing strategies, and brainstorm new project ideas
Examples of Successful Applications
Rotten Worms!:
Design and deliver a worm composting workshop for elementary and adult education schools in two RDKS communities. (Kara Jenne)
Residential and Commercial Recycling Service:
Collect and market materials for recycling from household and commercial customers in the Terrace area.(Do Your Part Recycling Co.)
Be The Change T-Shirt Campaign:
Design and sell t-shirts with a Reduce-Reuse-Recycle message and the RDKS Zero Waste Logo as a fund and awareness raiser (Northwest Watch).
Organics in the Landfill Education Pilot Project:
Research and write text for a professionally designed and produced sign to be used at RDKS (and by request member municipality) disposal facilities explaining why RDKS has a Zero Organics to Landfill program (Northwest Watch).
Healthy Food, Healthy Garden Project:
Create and fence a learning garden with composting area. (Thornhill Elementary School).
