New Democrats Motion Calls on Government to Review Unconventional Oil Regulations
Occasionally during the Parliamentary calendar, opposition parties are granted the power to choose the topic of debate for what is called an ‘Opposition Day’.
On Friday May 28th New Democrats introduced the following motion calling for a thorough review and strengthening of regulations regarding unconventional oil (tar sands, deepwater oil and shale gas). The House will vote on the Motion on the evening of Tuesday June 1st
May 26, 2010 — Ms. Duncan (Edmonton—Strathcona) — That this House notes the horror with which Canadians observe the ecological disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico and their call for action to prevent such an event in Canada, and therefore calls on the government immediately to conduct a thorough review and revision of all relevant federal laws, regulations and policies regarding the development of unconventional sources of oil and gas, including oil sands, deepwater oil and gas recovery, and shale gas, through a transparent process and the broadest possible consultation with all interested stakeholders to ensure Canada has the strongest environmental and safety rules in the world, and to report to the House for appropriate action.
26 mai 2010 — Mme Duncan (Edmonton—Strathcona) — Que la Chambre prenne acte de l’horreur que la catastrophe écologique actuellement en cours dans le golfe du Mexique inspire aux Canadiens et du fait qu’ils réclament la prise de mesures de prévention pour empêcher que pareille chose ne se produise au Canada, et par conséquent qu’elle exhorte le gouvernement à entreprendre immédiatement une révision exhaustive, au niveau fédéral, des lois, règlements et politiques qui régissent la mise en valeur des sources non conventionnelles de pétrole et de gaz, dont les sables bitumineux, les gisements pétroliers et gaziers en eau profonde et le gaz de schiste, au moyen d’un processus transparent comportant la consultation la plus vaste possible de tous les intervenants concernés en vue de doter le Canada des règles de sécurité et de protection de l’environnement les plus rigoureuses du monde, et à faire rapport à la Chambre afin d’en assurer le suivi.
